In The Father's Footsteps 23

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
— John 14:6

For the 23rd annual installment of Oklahoma's Catholic Men's Conference, we're pleased to welcome Jason Everett, Fr. Larry Richards, Fr. Roger Landry and Jon Leonetti to help us build the bridge from repentance to faithfulness.

Our conference day will begin with a powerful examination of the lives we live – our challenges, temptations and obstacles. We'll gain insights an tools throughout the day and move toward a clear vision of how to claim the lives we're called to live – lives forged by the way and the truth, built upon bedrock values and placed in service to God, family and faith. This is truly the Good Life!

REFLECTIONS FROM
IN THE FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS 22

We hope everyone made it home safely and filled with inspiration from Saturday's conference.Thank you so much for taking time from your schedule to be with us and to continue our journey together as men desiring to be the best we can be.

Called To Be Saints. So many of you have told us what a great day you experienced and how much you enjoyed this year's speakers. We started our day by getting a more complete picture of Blessed Stanley Rother - the amazing story of an Oklahoma farm boy who grew to become the man we know today... a man headed towards sainthood on the strength of his love for Christ and his perseverance. Blessed Stanley's story, as seen through the lens of each speaker's talk, is a reminder that we are called to grow in our relationship with Christ. We are called to live out our baptismal charge to love God and to spread His Good News. Blessed Stanley's story shows us a path to go from ordinary to the extraordinary and make clear the possibilities when we answer to call - the call to be saints!

Where Two Or More Are Gathered. Each year, we remind attendees, if this one day was your mountaintop experience - a climb to the summit that lasted only fleeting moments - then you've missed part of the message our speakers shared.

  • Are in a men's group at your parish? If so, what can your group do to bring more men into a relationship with Jesus Christ?
  • If there is no men's group at your parish, how can you form one? We strongly encourage you to visit with your pastor and discuss a plan to bring men together for the purpose of starting a group where inspiration, education and fellowship can make a difference in men's lives. If we can help with that, please don't hesitate to reach out.

There are many tools available to help you navigate from the mountop back through the desert plains. It just takes two or three men to say "Yes, I can do that," and you'll have formed a bond that will motivate its members and help to hold each member accountable. Remember, where two or more are gathered, there is Christ in our midst.

Have a Blessed Lent and a Joyful Easter! We wish you a Blessed Lent and the renewal that comes from sacrifice, prayer and giving. We wish you a Happy Easter and the joy that comes as you immerse yourself in the journey from Easter Sunday through Pentecost.

Peace to each of you!

A MESSAGE AND AN INVITATION FROM PATRICK COFFIN

______________________________________

Dear Brothers in Christ,
It was an honor to be with you in Norman on March 3rd for Oklahoma's Catholic Men's Conference. [It was also fun to wrestle with the sound system, which, in my experience, is a favored method of the evil one to disrupt the message of healing and restoration of men.]

My Free Gift to You. Since the free MP3 version of my talk didn't "take" technically, I want to offer my free e-booklet, "Once Saved, Not Always Saved: Catholic Teaching Explained." The tradition of men known as the eternal security theory is popular among any Protestant groups. This free booklet gives you a ton of biblical and logical ammo to explain the Catholic understanding of what it means to be saved.

Connect With Me Online. Checkout the show in iTunes and YouTube HERE (it's all about faith and culture with a dash of comedy), and sign up for my free newsletter HEREThe Inside Scoopfor all your manly faith-building needs.

Pilgrimage Opportunity. Also, if you know of anyone would like to join us last minute on our pilgrimage to Italy, we have land-packages still available. Click HERE to see the flyer for the land-only prices! Link to register is HERE

Keep in touch!

It's Time to Evangelize the Baptized

ABSTRACT: Nobody looking at the numbers describing the state of the Church in America would be optimistic about our future but the Church of Jesus Christ is built on the Resurrection of Christ. In other words, we are a people who don’t believe dead men necessarily stay dead. Why should the Church he founded die in the land of the free and the home of the brave where we still have the freedom to preach the gospel? It is time to reach those millions of Catholics who have been sacramentalized but not evangelized. It is time to evangelize the baptized.

OFFICIAL BIO:

Al Kresta is a broadcaster, journalist and author who is, first of all, a missionary.  He is President and CEO of Ave Maria Radio and host of “Kresta in the Afternoon.” He draws upon his unique faith background to create what is, arguably, the most fascinating — and most spiritually constructive — talk show on radio today.

A 1976 honors graduate of Michigan State University, Al has also done graduate work in theology at both Catholic and Protestant seminaries.  He became well known in the Detroit area for his program, “Talk from the Heart,” one of the top-rated Christian talk shows during the 1980s and 90s.  When he began the program, Al was a Protestant pastor.  The questions forced upon him as pastor, however, led him to return to the Catholic Church.  His profound personal conversion to Christ and return to the Catholic Church is told in the best-selling anthology Surprised By Truth.

In 1997, Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan recruited Al to launch the media apostolate, Ave Maria Communications.
Over the years Ave Maria Communications has included:

  • Credo, which became Michigan’s largest religious publication and the recipient of 18 merit awards from the Catholic Press Association;
  • Ave Maria Radio which produces a number of its own programs and features including Catholic Connection with Teresa Tomeo; The Doctor is In with Dr. Ray Guarendi and Coleen Kelly Mast; More2Life with Greg and Lisa Popcak; Food for the Journey with Sr. Ann Shields, as well as Kresta in the Afternoon and many others
  • The local radio stations WDEO (Detroit and Ann Arbor) and WMAX (Saginaw, Bay City and Midland).

Heard on over 250 stations and Sirius Satellite, Kresta in the Afternoon looks at all areas of life through the lens of Scripture and the teaching of the Catholic Church and takes on all comers.  Over the years, Al has engaged in vigorous discussions or debates with nationally known figures from politics, the arts, the Church, academia and business such as Jack Kevorkian, Mother Angelica, Jesse Jackson, Carl Bernstein, John McCain, Gloria Steinem, Pat Buchanan, Scott Hahn, Donna Shalala, Judge Robert Bork, Richard Gephardt, Jerry Falwell, George McGovern, Steve Allen, Bowie Kuhn, Mrs. Anwar Sadat, Martin Luther King III, Cal Thomas, Avery Cardinal Dulles, Chuck Colson, Alan Dershowitz, Ken Starr, James Earl Ray, Ben Carson, MeadowLark Lemon, Mary Higgins Clark, Terry Bradshaw, Earl Ruby (Jack Ruby’s brother), James Earl Ray (King’s assassin), Malcolm X’s brother, and Elijah Muhammad’s brother.

Kresta's life and spiritual journey took on a new dimension in February 2003, when he lost his left leg to necrotizing fasciitis, a virulent infection often referred to as the "flesh-eating bacteria."  His extended recovery and eventual return to broadcasting have given him new insights into the realities of suffering and hope.

He is the author of the recent best-selling book Dangers to the Faith: Recognizing Catholicism’s 21st Century Opponents. He is also author of Why Are Catholics So Concerned about Sin?: More Answers to Puzzling Questions about the Catholic Church, a follow-up to the best-seller Why Do Catholics Genuflect? And Answers to Other Puzzling Questions About the Catholic Faith and co-author with Nick Thomm of Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories From Well-Known Catholics,

Al and his wife, Sally, have been married for over 30 years and have been blessed with 5 children on earth and two in heaven.

The Secret Meaning and Mission of Men

ABSTRACT:

A man is a spiritual father whose very presence engenders life in others. From “the beginning”, masculinity and femininity has been meant to be a revelation of the deepest mystery of God: that God Himself is an eternal exchange of Love - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and He has destined us to share in that exchange. Establishing our identity as men from that deepest mystery is the irreplaceable foundation for any meaningful discussion of our mission and vocation as men. Who am I? Why am I here? What does my masculinity mean? How do I live to be truly happy? These are the questions that must be asked, pondered, meditated, and answered by every boy who would make passage to manhood. In light of femininity, our call to communion “in the image and likeness” of God, and love as “self-gift”, masculinity speaks to the “initiation” of the gift of ourselves in love. This initiation engenders life in others. Another name for this sacred engendering of life is fatherhood.

He and his wife Colleen have four children.

Robert Rogers

Robert T. Rogers, a quiet electrical engineer from Ohio, was living a wonderful life. A son of large loving family, he looked forward to building his own large family. He had a beautiful wife, Melissa, and four precious children ages eight to one. Although the couple had suffered several miscarriages, were challenged with a special needs child, and Melissa nearly died from a tubal pregnancy, Robert knew that God had blessed him and his faith remained unshaken.

Then tragedy struck; in an instant, a flash flood in Kansas overtook the family van on a highway in 2003, sweeping Robert’s beloved family away from him to their deaths. He was alone, on his knees before God asking “why?” Through his immediate trust in God, Robert has risen above adversity and shared his compelling message across the country with ABC, CBS, CNN, Montel Williams, Focus on the Family and numerous Catholic churches, schools, youth rallies and men’s conferences.

The amazing story of how Robert not only survived the unspeakable tragedy, but triumphed into a man on fire with love for God, is chronicled in his book, “Into the Deep: One Man’s Story of How Tragedy Took His Family But Could Not Take His Faith.”

Now Robert travels the world,  sharing his witness that life is short  and we must cherish those we love, and keep God at the center of our lives. His powerful talk was laced with Scripture as a reminder that all those who love God will encounter tragedy and that the secrets for dealing with it lie within stories such as the Book of Job. Robert has a goal of opening an orphanage in honor of each of his five deceased family members. So far he has honored his wife Melissa with an orphanage in Russia and his daughter Makenah with an orphanage in Rwanda. Information on his apostolate,  “Mighty in the Land” can be found on his website. Robert closed his talk with a poignant song to his oldest daughter Makenah in which he asked her what it was like to live in heaven.

An accomplished worship leader, pianist, songwriter and author, Robert teaches others to live a life of no regrets with his inspiring words and original songs at the piano.

Chris Padgett

A brilliant songwriter, musician, speaker and worship leader, Chris Padgett travels around the world giving talks, missions and concerts.

A founding member of the popular Christian band Scarecrow and Tinmen, Chris wrote, recorded and toured with the band for seven years. He also has four solo albums to his credit: Follow, Golden, Wonder (Joyful Desperation), and The Encounter.

One of the most effective champions of family life in the church today, Chris can speak from experience. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart for over 15 years and has eight children. As he likes to say, the Padgett family is taking the call to “make disciples” very seriously!

Chris and his wife, Linda, recently published their first book, Not Ready for Marriage, Not Ready for Sex: One Couple’s Return to Chastity. Recounting their journey from courtship to marriage, the book speaks to young people about maintaining chastity in the midst of a culture that encourages otherwise.

Known for his zany sense of humor and his love of books, Chris is a “very zealous” convert to Catholicism. He and his family entered the church on Easter of 1999. He holds a master’s in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, and has begun doctoral work in Marian studies at the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton, Ohio.

Chris is a veteran of three World Youth Days (Rome, Toronto, and Cologne; planning on Australia) and has ministered at many diocesan youth events. His television appearances include Life on the Rock with Jeff Cavins and Living His Life Abundantly with Johnette Benkavick, both on EWTN. He has spoken on numerous radio shows and appeared at several Steubenville youth conferences.

Upcoming projects include a best-of compilation of live performances, an iTunes project with some of the funniest stories and messages from his talks, and a DVD.

Coach John Smith

The reigning Big 12 coach of the year, John Smith is a name synonymous with wrestling success.

The Oklahoma State head coach won six consecutive world championships as a competitor from 1987-92, including gold medals at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and he owns five national championships as head coach of the Cowboys.

Smith accepted the head coaching position at Oklahoma State in 1992 and the numbers and accomplishments since that time speak for themselves. He has led his alma mater to five NCAA team titles in 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, and he has coached 23 NCAA individual champions and five Olympians. Under his watch, the Cowboys have brought 11 team conference championships and 65 individual conference titles back to Stillwater. He has seen 89 of his student-athletes earn All-America recognition, an average of 4.7 All-America honorees per year.

Most recently, he led the Cowboys to their ninth Big 12 team title in 14 tries when the Pokes bested the favored Iowa State Cyclones in 2010. With a freshman and sophomore-heavy lineup that entered the event as underdogs, Smith guided a trio of Cowboys to championships in lifting OSU over an Iowa State squad that was ranked second in the nation at the time and was loaded with seniors and other experienced wrestlers.

In 1995, Smith married the former Toni Donaldson. The couple has three sons - Joseph, Samuel and Levi and two daughters - Isabell and Cecilia.

Breakout Sessions

The Modern Father:
Confronting The Challenges of Parenting for all the Many Ways Our Families Are Made

As the cultural boundaries for marriage and family have changed, so have the types of roles men play in the family unit. Some of us are biological fathers, other adoptive fathers. Some men have divorced and only have partial custody of their children. They may be stepfathers through remarriage – or their children may be part of a new family that includes a stepfather. While we are called to the same peerless fatherly virtues established by our Heavenly Father, our approaches may need to be very different depending upon our circumstances. Spend an hour exploring the challenges of the modern father with Conference Speaker Robert Rogers and a guest presenter. Introductory presentation followed by table discussions with other men.

TALK + GROUP DISCUSSIONS

Apologetics 101: Seven Truths of the Church You Must Know To Defend Your Faith!

For the most part, we Catholics get along rather nicely with our Christian and non-Christian brothers and sisters. Our kids play on the same baseball teams, we might work for the same company, we live on the same block. But at some point, most of us – or are spouse or children – are confronted by someone who wants to challenge our faith. It might be their aim to dissuade us of our Catholic faith in favor of another denomination. Or it might be their hope that we lose all faith and join in their agnostic, humanistic or atheistic viewpoint. Sometimes even the challenges that start simply enough – an invitation by your child’s friend to a night of praise and worship music at their church – lay the foundation for an all-out assault on the Catholic faith. Do you know where your faith is most vulnerable? The arguments that most often plant the seeds of doubt and persuade believers to doubt? Invest an hour with Conference Speaker Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers as he arms you with the seven truths of the Church you must know to defend your faith! This breakout session does not include group discussion. Questions and answers will be taken as time permits.

TALK ONLY

The Very Big Business of Deception and Addiction

Pornography is a $100 billion international business. No longer hidden in back rooms or concealed by manilla wrappers, pornography is a pervasive part of society that has the power to divide households and ruins lives. Join Deacon Roy Forsythe as he moderates a viewing of a discussion panel on the power and destruction of pornography. The panel was hosted by 2010 ITFF Speaker Steve Bollman and features a producer and actress from the pornography industry, a couple whose marriage has been impacted by pornography and a doctor who specializes in the effect pornography has on individuals and society. One of the most controversial aspects of pornography is the concept of addiction – and you’ll be stunned to understand how pornography stimulates the brain and distorts an individual’s ability to have a healthy sexual relationship inside of marriage. For the sake of your brothers, sons, friends and yourself, you’ll want to spend an hour learning why psychologists and other health professionals view pornography as a powerful deterrent to a healthy life when so many believe pornography is “not that big of a deal.” While most of us acknowledge the gravity of this all too common sin, Steve Bollman and his guests help us better understand how to regain control of lives tainted by pornography.

A SPECIAL NOTE FOR FATHERS

We know that the annual Catholic men’s conference is a father-son tradition for many. We make sure that fathers and sons can share much of the day together but have listened carefully to the feedback of young men over the past few years to create a a time where your sons can relax, be themselves and share freely with peers. This is an opportunity for growth that includes preparation for reconciliation with Fr. Larry Richards in a way that is specific to the challenges faced by high school and college aged-men. We encourage fathers to attend the main conference track, choosing one of the three breakouts designed for them and let your sons attend the young men’s breakout session independently.

How well are we living up to that plan? What are the consequences of creating our own answers and where is the Eucharist in all of this? Walk away with the answers to these questions and some of the wisdom of God, as revealed to John Paul the Great.

The Fast, The Furious and Your Family - Fighting for Time In A Frenzied World

Have you stopped to ask yourself, “why are we so busy?”  Carting children between practices, games, recitals, school events, birthday parties and get togethers with family and friends – all the while multi-tasking: checking e-mail from work, directing homework lessons, sending text messages, trying to keep up with the deafening din of communication, entertainment and activity.  Are you with your family but not truly present to them?  Has all of this activity squeezed out the time to truly talk, share, listen, pray and relax?  Put the brakes on for an hour and focus on how to break the cycle of “going and going” but not getting anywhere.

Co-Presented by Fr. Geoff Rose, OSFS and Joe Elbow

Deacon Alex Jones

For twenty-five years, Alex Jones was the senior minister of two churches in the city of Detroit: Zion Congregational Church of God in Christ – the second oldest Pentecostal church in Michigan – and Maranatha Christian Church, an Evangelical/Charismatic church. In March 1998, while reading the apostolic fathers and subsequent church history in preparation for a Wednesday evening bible study, Alex Jones discovered the Catholic Church to be charismatic/liturgical, hierarchical, and Eucharistic-centered. In light of that revelation, Alex and his wife Donna began a two year journey into the Catholic Church that culminated in fifty-four members of his previous congregation, including fourteen members of his own family, entering the Catholic Church. The group began R.C.I.A. at St. Suzanne Catholic Community on September 10, 2000 and were welcomed into the Catholic Church through confirmation during Easter Vigil on April 14, 2001. Alex Jones was subsequently ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Archdiocese of Detroit on October 1, 2005. Deacon Jones received his Masters in Pastoral Studies from Sacred Heart Major Seminary on April 28, 2007 and retired from the position of evangelization coordinator for the Archdiocese of Detroit on May 31, 2007. Deacon Jones currently serves the three parishes of St. Suzanne/OLGH, St. Mary of Redford, and St. Thomas Aquinas. He and his wife Donna have three sons and ten grandchildren.
